(You will only carry your day pack).

Does not include meals during the pilgrimage. See above for other exclusions.

For those of you who want to have an extra week in Tibet to see the area around Mount Kailash and sacred lake Manasarovar, we have a non-hiking option. For the 2 nights that the hikers will be on the pilgrimage you will stay in a guesthouse in Darchen. The cost is the same as for those doing the pilgrimage— $4455. However you will need to pay additionally for 2 nights at the guesthouse. Sharing a room for 2 nights will be a total of about $50. A single for 2 nights will be about $100. No meals will be included. You will not have a guide while the others are hiking, though the driver will be available. If we have more than five people taking this option then we will need to hire a guide. This will also be an extra cost. Our tour agency will organize the guesthouse and you will either pay them in Lhasa or pay the hotel directly.

All payments are non-refundable. However, they are transferable up until May 25, if you should find someone to take your place, (less the $800 deposit). We therefore strongly urge you to purchase trip insurance, so you are covered in some cases if you must cancel due to health.

You MUST be in excellent physical health with a high level of physical and cardiovascular fitness!

Even with a high level of fitness, traveling at these altitudes, eating and drinking unfamiliar food and water is always a risk. We wish to do everything possible so that everyone stays healthy and enjoys this once-in-a-lifetime journey!

The lowest altitude is Lhasa which is at 3600 m / 11,811 feet. The highest altitude is at the Mount Everest base camp: 5100 m / 16,732 feet! Just walking around a temple at this altitude is exhausting. Although the main tour does not involve a major hike, there is a lot of walking, climbing and stairs! This trip is not for you if you are a slow walker, have asthma, heart problems, have sleep apnea (sleep apnea is made considerably worse by altitude, even people who have never had apnea before can experience it at these altitudes,) or any other significant health issue. Jonette has the right to exclude anyone from this trip at her sole discretion.

FITNESS AND HEALTH—Mt Kailash trekking option
To do this pilgrimage you must commit to a rigorous fitness program prior to the trip.  We are only taking 15 people on this part of the tour because of the difficulty of hiking at altitude, and the need to keep the group small. Food and accommodations are very, very basic on this pilgrimage. The lowest altitude for this part of the journey is 4600 m / 15,092 feet. The first day is a 20 km hike to an altitude of 5100 m / 16,732 feet. Day 2 is a challenging day with two passes, covering 18 km: Dokpala at 5000 m and Dormala at 5600 m. Although the passes are not steep, hiking uphill at those altitudes is tiring and slow. Day three of the hike is only 12 km to 4600 m / 15,092 feet. This is truly a pilgrimage and I hope that every step brings you closer to the God within and without. There is an opportunity to rent a horse or a yak in Darchen for the 3 day pilgrimage. The cost is about $150.

If you have selected the double room option but have not selected a roommate, we will assign you one. If we do not have someone of your gender who needs a roommate, you will be required to purchase the single room supplement. (See Single Room Above). It is therefore advisable to get your registration form in early, as we pair off roommates on a first come, first served basis.

Arrival: Make your reservations to arrive in Lhasa (LXA) on Tuesday, September 4. We will have three airport pickups that day. Chengdu (CTU) or Beijing (PEK) China are the easiest way into Tibet. (Any Chinese gateway city is OK except Hong Kong and Goa). Your journey may require that you are overnight in either Chengdu or Beijing. If so, we will need your hotel details in China, because our Tibet travel agency will post your Tibet travel documents to your Chinese hotel. If you are transiting in Chengdu or Beijing and not staying overnight, you will be met by a representative of Explore Tibet at your gateway airport who will give you the travel permit for Tibet. It is much more difficult to come to Tibet through Kathmandu. If you wish to go to Nepal we suggest you do this after our Tibet trip.

We will have your flight arrival details before you land.  You will be met at the airport by an agent holding a sign that says “Jonette Crowley Group.”

Departure: Plan your departure to leave Lhasa on Sunday, September 16 for the Main tour; or Saturday, September 22 if you will be going on the Mt Kailash pilgrimage.

Please email Julie at the CCC office your flight schedule as soon as you have it or by May 25, in order to ensure that we have everyone who needs airport transport scheduled.

For this tour we require that you have travel insurance to cover you in case you cannot make the trip, but especially to cover you for health needs while you are in Tibet. We strongly encourage medical evacuation insurance as part of your travel insurance policy.

All visitors must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date they are departing the country. All visitors will require a Chinese visa. In applying for the Chinese visa, do not mention that you are going to Tibet, as the Chinese are very sensitive about this.

You will be required to have an original copy of your Tibet Travel Permit in order to board the plane from your Chinese gateway city to Lhasa. This will be obtained by our tour company. They will need a clear scan of the photo page of your passport and your Chinese visa. Your passport photocopy and Chinese visa must be sent to our tour organizer in Lhasa no later then August 1, so they can prepare the extensive paperwork necessary for a Tibet travel visa. We will give you those details later.

If you overnight in Chengdu or Beijing en route to Lhasa, we will need to know the exact details of your hotel. Our tour company will mail your travel permit to the hotel. They are not allowed to mail it to any foreign country and that includes Hong Kong. If you are not spending the night in China en route to Tibet, then for an extra fee our tour company will send a representative to meet you at the airport to give you your original documents. You are not able to board your plane without having a Tibet Travel Permit. You are responsible to pay the extra fee. It will be between 400 and 500 CNY depending on the city (about $66 to $83).

The Chinese yuan CNY is the currency in Tibet. ATMs are located in the bigger cities, however there is a limit of 1,000 to 2,000 CNY per day that can be withdrawn. Hotels and major tourist shops do take credit cards.

Tips are not included in the tour cost. Because the tip amounts are so small, we will not be collecting group tips. You'll be responsible for personally tipping baggage handlers, guides and drivers. Guides/drivers usually get about $15 a day from the entire group.

The space is limited. A waiting list will be established if the tour is over-subscribed.  In the event of cancellations, it will be a first-come, first–serve priority. You will be notified as soon in, at that point we will need full payment from you.

More information coming later…
As we learn more and get closer to the tour, we will send additional information, especially on a trip preparation, fitness, packing, preparing for high altitude, etc.
