(Jonette was recently in Bosnia researching the pyramids that have been discovered there.)
The beauty of the country strikes you immediately. Sarajevo is a small city surrounded with mountains. Rivers and natural springs are abundant. Multiple hues of green meet the eye, right up to a dusting of fresh snow on the highest peaks. The landscape reminds us that Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.
Then in 1992 Serbian and Croatian forces went to war. Bosnia-Herzegovina in between the two became a battleground as the horrible ethnic fighting raged on until 1995. Before the war, Yugoslavia was a strong and proud nation, no debt, a strong army, good industry, people of different beliefs generally got along. A village might have a Mosque and an Orthodox Church and a Catholic Church on the same street. Some believe the war was instigated by outsiders, creating ethnic divisions where there were none, destroying the industry and creating debt.
Sarajevo and the beautiful river town of Mostar still show the scars of war 20 years later. Once glorious Austria-Hungarian buildings are bombed out shells. Nearly every apartment building is riddled with bullet holes and pockmarks from shrapnel.
I'm reminded of a story from the war time of an elderly cellist from the Sarajevo symphony. His heart was broken when a bomb exploded in the marketplace killing scores of people lining up to buy bread. He asked himself what could he do to bring healing and beauty back to his neighborhood? The troubles were so big, the pain so deep and he was only a retired musician. It is said that every day he donned his tuxedo, brought his chair and cello and went to the site of the bombed out bakery to play. Soon people came out of hiding, they gathered. After days of this other musicians joined him. Before long this small act of healing caught the attention of the international media. Soon music students and groups from around the world held performances, collecting money for the people of Sarajevo. Since the war 20 years ago, the concert hall has been rebuilt and this old man was one of the first to perform again for his beloved community.
I plan to lead a spiritual adventure trip to Bosnia to visit the pyramid complex discovered there, and then to neighboring Croatia in the fall of 2015. For information on this and all my events go to www.Jonettecrowley.com.
